PRESS RELEASE
December 22, 2003.
Santa Cruz, California
Santa Cruz Bicycles announced today the formation of the Santa Cruz Syndicate. Comprised of top athletes in Gravity racing, street, urban, free ride and ultra-marathon, the Santa Cruz Syndicate is anything but a typical factory racing effort.
“Our goal was to assemble a group of athletes that would travel the world riding and racing under the Santa Cruz banner, in all facets of mountain biking”, said Rob Roskopp, owner of Santa Cruz Bicycles.
“We didn’t feel that having a standard factory racing team, with X number of Downhill and Cross-country racers in the standard formula was the way for us to go.” continued Roskopp. “It made much better sense to have athletes that would still race in the top events in the World, but would also participate in street and free-ride events, festivals and contests”.
Team operations will be based in Temecula, CA, and run by former professional racer Derin Stockton. Stockton, who ran the ITS/Santa Cruz team in 2003, said the new direction “isn’t some marketing gimmick, but a reflection of how companies are spending their marketing dollars and what they need in return to commit sponsorship money”.
A few interesting details of the Syndicate are that all riders are allowed to sign individual sponsors for personal items, such as clothing, goggles, helmets and shoes. The equipment package will be provided by the team, and will be identical for all riders.
“Allowing members to sign certain personal sponsors is the best of both worlds for us” said Stockton. “We will still be very much like a traditional team at major racing events, but with our athletes being able to retain personal sponsors, and thus their identities in the sport, it increases our overall exposure and lets our athletes keep sponsor relationships they have built over the years which is good for everybody involved”.
Headlining the Syndicate is current World Cup downhill Champion Nathan Rennie from Australia. Rennie’s main goals are to repeat as World Cup Champion and win a World Championship. “I’m really happy to be a part of this squad,” stated Rennie. “Everything will be top notch, bikes, equipment, and support. All I have to do is ride my bike.”
Joining Rennie is American Kirt Vories, who will be racing all major gravity events and still continuing with his successful All Ride program, which brings the vibe of street and dirt riding to new venues and people across North America via mountain bikes. “This team allows me to concentrate on racing, and keep my All Ride program going too.” Commented Vories. “I already have a national title in slalom, and I want to add a downhill title to it.”
Waiting to fill the large shoes of their teammates will be Americans Cameron Zink and Henry O’Donnell. Both are still 17 years old, and have another year in the junior class. Zink (whose free-riding was for the Santa Cruz backed Superheroes team in 2003) will be splitting time between the two disciplines, allowing him to develop his racing and free-riding skills, the latter of which will still be in conjunction with the Superheroes Team. O’Donnell, the 2003 Junior National Downhill Champion, had a breakout season in 2003 and looks to continue focusing on improving his racing in the future.
Rounding out the Syndicate is Ultra-Marathon racer Mark Hendershot. Hendershot will be competing in various ultra-distance events, including Sea Otter, various National events and the 24-hour solo World Championships in Whistler, Canada.
Sponsors for the Santa Cruz Syndicate are: Santa Cruz Bicycles, SRAM Drivetrains and Rock Shox front suspension, Progressive 5th Element rear suspension, Easton Components, Avid Disc brakes, WTB rims, hubs and seats, Truvativ Crank, bottom bracket and chainguides, Cranks Brothers pedals and ODI grips.

Got this email from Jason on behalf of the Perth MTB Club. Some of you may already know about this but it's worth front page notice.
Hi guys, As you may have seen on stiksandstones and from someone on the farkin forums Perth Mountain Bike Club is hosting a fundraising race for John. The race itself looks to be pretty big with Sam Hill organising just about every big name pro to sign one of there jerseys. these will be auctioned off on the day of the race for all of those to attend. Hopefully we should raise a fair bit of money from that.
Local shops have been very supportive with the race with many donating heaps of prizes for the competitors racing (without actually asking for them mind you)to draw a larger number of racers. All entry fees from the racing will be going to John.
The main thing though which we hope will raise the largest amount of money is on-line donations. They can be made at the new Perth Mountain Bike Club website at a new URL of www.Perthmtb.com
Entry fees for the race is: for all categories under and including under 17's US$20 with all categories over under 17's (eg: under 19's, expert, elite) being US$35.
We hade to make it US$ because paypal doesnt accept AUS$. On the Day it will be AUS$25 and AUS$50 respectively.
Basically if you donate online more than US$20 your name will be put on a startlist that will be presented to John and advertised on the net...(farkin
maybe..hint) Obviously all the people that raced on the day and donated online will be on the startlist,(DNS for alot of people we hope)
All donations (minus the 2.5% paypal fee) will go to John so if you could let the farkin crew kmow in the news that they can donate money at perthmtb.com that would be a lot of help to give John some money for expenses.
Cheers

The USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency) has announced that downhill pro Gary Houseman returned a positive test for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) at the Grouse Mountain World Cup on July 12th 2003.
THC is a metabolite of marijuana. Under UCI / IOC rules it is a prohibited substance.
Houseman accepted a one-year suspension from competition beginning on July 12, 2003, the date of the test.
All of his results from that date (including his Grouse win) are now invalid. In addition, he has received a fine of 2,000 Swiss Francs.
This all means that Ivan Oulego Moreno of Spain therefore won at the rain-affected Grouse Mountain round. |

There is a quad race on the all new and improved track at Eildon set for the 8th of February 2004. Check out www.ftf.com.au for details, not that there are many at the moment. I will post a reminder later in January.
This is the track which will be used for the 2004 Nationals and this race will be the only time it is open to riders before then so come up and have a ride.
The track is awesome- slightly longer, more jumps, bigger jumps, bigger berms, extra berms, multiple lines... well worth the trip, its not like its far from Melbourne anyway!
Cost and other details will be announced when they are decided. |

Peugeot: two wheelers good
December 16, 2003
Peugeot is gambling on a driver who has contested only 12 rallies in his life as part of its 2004 World Championship campaign. Nicolas Vouilloz, the 27-year-old former mountain bike world champion, will contest six rounds of the series in a 206 WRC, beginning with the Monte Carlo Rally.
Vouilloz has never competed in a World Rally Car, nor outside France. Eight of his rallies have been in the 206 Cup in France, in which he showed such promise that Peugeot let him drive a Super 1600 206 on the Rallye du Var. He set one fastest stage time and a host in the top three.
Vouilloz will be joined on the Monte Carlo Rally next month by Miguel Campos, the Portuguese who finished second in the European Championship this year.
Sweden’s Daniel Carlsson will tackle at least eight loose-surface rounds of the World Championship and Henning Solberg, older brother of World Champion Petter Solberg, will contest seven rounds in a 206 backed by the Norwegian importer.
Thanks to Warwick over at Dhrace.com for the rally news. |

Sick of posting pics of your bike to countless people? Want a nice easy way to show it off? Want to look factory?
Yes you do!
I have created an online mountain biking profiles section for registered forum members of farkin. Here you can display your details and post pics and specs of your precious steeds!
That's not all...
You get an automically generated signature that links straight back to your profile!! (where's my pimp hat?). This sig is usable across all internet forums (did I mention it's factory?).
Anyhow, enough blabbering.. check it out here. For a good example of a profile, checkout this profile here. |

 | DIRTSYSTEMS T-shirt Giveaway (0 comments) (link) Wednesday, 10-December-2003 6:10 PM - by DOM | |

Thanks to DirtSystems Farkin members have the chance to win a Medium sized light blue DirtSystems T-shirt as part of our Best Photo Competition.
Who are DirtSystems
This from their website.
We're an Australian company providing Australian made clothing to mountain bikers everywhere. We're starting off small with a range of tshirts, long sleeves and girls tanks that are equally wearable when you're riding or out on the town. When we design stuff and choose colours we try to balance what looks good as casual wear, and what is functional on the bike. This means something that will breathe in summer, and stuff that is not too dark so it gets hot.
In the near future you will see riding specific tops from us (i.e. mesh) as well as hoodies, windcheaters and jackets for guys and girls.
I have the Tee in my grasp and I have to say it's very impressive. I saw it walk out of my room and start railing the yard on my bike. Honestly it's great quality and fits well and is sure to last longer then your cranks.
If you would like to win this T-shirt follow the below link to our General Discussion area to par-take in our photo competition. Be sure to read the rules and regulations.
Thanks again to Tim and Tim of DirtSystems for the giveaway. If you would like to purchase DirtSystems clothing visit www.dirtsystems.com and tell them Farkin sent ya.
Good luck
Dom

 | Pro DH at Big Bear for 2004 (7 comments) (link) Friday, 5-December-2003 00:36 AM - by Ryan | |

What I had originally dismissed as wild speculation appears to be true; the Big Bear round of the 2004 NORBA series will do away completely with the traditional time-trial downhill format in favour of four-man head-to-head racing down a shortened, widened downhill course.
Only the Pro and Semi-Pro categories will race head-to-head, amateur racers will still contest a normal, time-trial downhill race. Points from the Big Bear round will still count towards the overall NORBA title.
Get on over to Velonews.com to check out the full story.
Right now it's too late for me to think anything about this new "development", all it does is make my brain hurt. |

Thanks to Tony and Ben at Advance Traders we've got our grubby little hands on a brand spanking new Rocky Mountain Flow to ride the hell out of for the next week or so.
First impressions are a hand built, Easton RAD tubed frame that's a work of art, tough components and a great looking colour scheme for RM's top of the line hardcore hardtail.
Check these happy snaps out and get a look at the specs on the Rocky Mountain Bikes home page.

Round 4 of the Cairns club championships have been run, Some great photo's if anyone is keen to check out the awesome terrain in Cairns.
