I have used these Time platform pedals since last Christmas after using Time ATACs for the previous two and a half years. Personally, I need to use Time pedals for the extra lateral float, as I have a dicky right knee that normal SPDs cause problems with.
The body of the Control Z is a one piece alloy platform that houses Time's axle, bearings and engagement system. Weight for the Control Z's is 538 grams a pair and mounting is via an allen key through the rear of the axle.
The cleats used by the Control Z are standard Time cleats and offer 2 different degrees (13 & 17) of entry/exit float simply by changing the cleats from one shoe to the other. The cleats are made of brass and last longer than SPD type ones, I am still using the cleats from my original ATACs, though they are pretty stuffed now. Replacement cleats are approximately $50 a pair.
Entry and exit to these pedals is very simple and remains consistent as there is no cleat entry adjustment like SPDs. The mud clearance capabilities of Time pedals are legendary and the Control Z's are no different. If you are riding muddy downhill or trailriding then the Control Z offers far superior mud clearance of the cleat engagement area than the Shimano PD-M646.
The Time pedal does not look as strong and heavy duty as the 646s although I have hit quite a few rocks and logs with no damage so far.
Grip on the platform is pretty good when not clipped in and is considerably better when you are wearing flat shoes or soft soled SPD shoes rather than hard-soled XC SPD shoes. The platform of the Control Z is slightly wider than that of the Shimano PD-M646.
The bearings are of excellent quality and the pedals are easy to work on and service. They are very simple to clean, just needing a hose off or degrease when necessary and then a quick spray with canola cooking oil in the engagement mechanism. A drop of oil under the inner rubber bearing seal now and again makes the pedals spin smoothly and so far there is no play in the bearings.
A cheaper version of the Control Z (black model) retails for around $190 while the grey Control Z retails for approx $250. For more information on the Time Control Z pedal, check out the Time USA website.
