F: Enough of the problems and doom and gloom of a hurting industry … Lets talk good things. MUDCOWS!!! We have all seen them and love them, with half the Farkin crew being Cairns locals we are all extremely excited to see another instalment. I know Dylan has some crazy footage in the works can you give us anymore goss?
GJ: Dylan has been going strong on the new video, there are 2 installments coming, cant say exactly what order, but they will be nice.
Naturally an M4 is on its way, and a "Best of Mudcows DVD" with some never seen before footage of some real strange stuff, considered too nasty to show at the time. The best news is that another crew of riders here have been helping us develop some crazy new filming techniques like no other, the footage is insane.
F: It seems a lot of the video’s coming out today are focussing more on the "Free riding" as some like to refer to it or the huckers as we call em and not the lifestyle and crazy antic’s that mountain bikers seem to possess. Films which come to my mind are once again Mudcows with it’s local Cairns craziness and video’s like "The Circus" from Warwick Patterson which capture the racing scene and lifestyle why are these vids hard to come by recently ?
GJ: It’s all about race, race, race, that’s good, because that is the only place you can see it, on a video, or some short cut lame TV show. If that’s what everybody wants, that’s fine, I don’t though. I always loved the lifestyle "reality show" style, see it how it is. You see, to make a great film, a lot of stuff is setup, planned and filmed over and over to get that perfect shot. That’s the way it is.
What I lived for was that compact shitty camera that sat in my backpack, as we all rode, and captured the evolution of the beginning of a sport, the crashes, the gashes and the shear love for what we were all doing. That may never happen again, and I feel privileged that I was there. Remember "Ice Cream Heads from Outer Space" filmed in 1990-1, was the first MTB movie in the world. It had the first heli biking, the first big jumps, and nasty crashes. Hans Rey was the first to include trials and MTB, he was, and still is a GOD. Then came Mudcows, when all there was available were movies like "Tread" and "Hans Reys" movies.
After a while I saw international replications of my style, and then replications of the famous "cable cam" shots, that Michael Ronning instigated and designed. That’s when you know you’ve done well, when people copy.
F: What are your thoughts on our Aussie contingent at the moment? I know you played a big part in many of our Aussie pro’s success. How proud are you now of how our Aussie girls and boys are throwing down results on the world circuit? What is it going to take to get these people known around Australia as high profile sports stars?
GJ: Naked downhill runs on Bert Newton’s breakfast show.
Be caught up a tree with a cat.
Doing illegal back flips at footy matches.
Racing downhill bikes at a burnout competition.
Ghosting your bike through a backyard blitz.
Doing a flick out on "Neighbors"
The best way is to get some high profile footage of racing.
The Red Bull Race at Jindabyne made every person I spoke to sit up and go "Hey did you see that stuff on tellie the other day?, Those guys were crazy" Its because Joe and Doreen Suburbs play the TV rating game, and what impresses them, impresses the news. It comes back to seeing our sport as quality and pro, not dumb and stupid, because downhilling is one of the most spectacular sports in the world. They just can’t physically see it!
F: I want the kids to take something away from this interview something "Jacob's" said so they can improve their local trails or jumps or whatever. Can you provide us with some points for good trail creationmaintenance? (Note - Trail creation is only permitted in designated areas, farkin.net does NOT condone building tracks where ever the hell you like)
GJ: I would have to say the best way to have great trails and great places to go, is keep it to yourselves.
It’s all about living in your OWN fun world; you don’t need to create attention so people that know nothing of your passion, are FORCED to take what you have, away from you.
EASY, don’t give them a reason to come into your world. If you have a downhill that exited onto a freeway, and riders were ghosting their bikes in front of cars, then everybody would know where your track is. I always have a secure entrance and quiet exit.
The best trails are made from passion, the best trails are hidden, and the best lasting trails are environmentally secure.
The most successful trails are put in a great place that has good shade, away from the stockers, but close for convenience.
Don’t cut the trees around you.
Don’t use trees for anything but shade.
Take the extra time finding boulders to secure edges on trails.
NEVER use old branches and logs for track stabilization, these burn out, go rotten and fall apart after a while, then its start all over again.
Create a style that you like, individually yours, but all can ride.
Where you would need to brake heavy, look for an up ramp instead, this washes your speed off, and feels so much better anyway.
Descents should get harder with speed.
Take your local politician to your area and show them how much fun these trails are, explain how your bike works, remember they are in that position, because they never ever got air and don’t understand what its about.
Don’t make it look like a feral camp, you would be surprised the amounts of trails that get bulldozed because they look like dump sites.
F: Glen, we know you’re an idea’s man and have no doubt many things in the pipeline at the moment. Can you tell us about what you’ve got brewing at the moment or what you’re planning to do? Tell us about your Didgeridoo Plus invention and can you spill any world first information on anything else you’re working on "wink wink rolling camera wink"
GJ: There are so many inventions we have out here at the moment; the first, Didgeridoo invention was conceived in Japan at the world cup there in 98. It has taken this long to patent it and start marketing it. In short, there are about 300,000 didgeridoos made and sold a year for tourists, and a major percentage can never play them. My unit is for that tourist market. It’s a small foam ball that fits inside the didgeridoo and with a pre recorded soundtrack, plays the didge by itself. www.didgeridoo-plus.com
I have a major new product hitting the market within 2 years, and it has some relevance to cycling, but is mainly a drinking system, that will change the way we use recreational drinking systems. The patent will be through in about 12 months, and the product out soon after.
The new camera systems (5 all up) are very much under the wraps, sorry guys, I can only say that when you see the footage you will *#^#** poo yourselves. Farkin will get first shot at showing the footage.
